Near Zero-Thermal Expansion Glass Ceramics
We are developing a new near-zero thermal-expansion (NZTE) glass ceramics with superior thermal shock resistance. The materials are inorganic, non-porous glass ceramic, characterized by crystalline phase evenly distributed within residual glass phase. The glass phase has a positive thermal expansion (PTE), while the crystalline phase has negative thermal expansion(NTE), which balances the PTE of the glass phase to give a resultant NZTE. Figure 4 shows the thermal expansion of three glass ceramics. Depending on the composition, the materials can show positive, near-zero or negative thermal expansion at a wide temperature range up to 600°C.
